What is a Hardware Wallet? (The Background)

When you "own" cryptocurrency, what you actually own is a pair of cryptographic keys: a public key and a private key. The public key is like your bank account number—you can share it to receive funds. The private key is like your password, PIN, and signature all in one—it proves you own the funds and is used to authorize (sign) transactions.

If your private key is stored on a device connected to the internet (like a computer or smartphone), it's vulnerable to hackers, malware, and viruses. This is a "hot wallet." If an exchange holds your keys for you, you are trusting them not to get hacked or go bankrupt. This is "custodial" storage.

A Trezor hardware wallet solves this problem. It's a "cold wallet," a small, physical device that stores your private keys completely offline.

Since the keys never leave the device, they cannot be stolen by online attackers. All transactions are signed *inside* the secure chip on the Trezor itself. This is where Trezor Suite comes in: it's the secure software bridge that lets you interact with the online crypto world, while your keys remain safely offline.

All-in-One Crypto Management

Complete Portfolio Dashboard

Get a clear, instant overview of all your assets. Trezor Suite provides a beautiful interface with charts and real-time values, so you always know your net worth. Manage thousands of coins and tokens from one unified dashboard.

Secure Transactions

Send and receive crypto with confidence. Every outgoing transaction must be physically confirmed on your Trezor device's screen. This "what you see is what you sign" (WYSIWYS) principle ensures you are sending the right amount to the right address, protecting you from clipboard-hijacking malware.

Buy, Sell & Exchange

Through its integration with trusted third-party providers via Invity, Trezor Suite lets you buy crypto with fiat currency or exchange one asset for another, all from within the app. The best part? Your newly acquired assets are sent directly to your secure cold storage.

Enhanced Privacy Features

Privacy is a core tenet of cryptocurrency. Trezor Suite respects this by integrating Tor, a network that masks your IP address and online activity. For Bitcoin users, it also offers CoinJoin, a method for mixing transactions to obscure their origin and enhance your financial privacy.

Cross-Platform Access

Manage your assets from anywhere. Trezor Suite is available as a full-featured desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. You can also use Trezor Suite for Web for convenient access from any browser, or the Trezor Suite Lite mobile app for on-the-go portfolio tracking.

Coin Control & Fee Management

Take granular control of your Bitcoin transactions. Trezor Suite allows for advanced features like "Coin Control," letting you choose exactly which unspent outputs (UTXOs) to use in a transaction. You can also set custom transaction fees to either save on costs or speed up a confirmation.

Uncompromising Security by Design

Your Keys, Your Crypto. Period.

Trezor Suite is built on the principle of self-custody. We are non-custodial, which means we *never* have access to your private keys or your funds. You are in complete and total control. This is the fundamental promise of Trezor: to provide you with the tools for true financial sovereignty.

The Recovery Seed: Your Master Backup

During setup, your Trezor device generates a 12 or 24-word "recovery seed." This seed is the master key to all your accounts and private keys. Trezor Suite guides you through securely backing up this seed *offline*. You write it down on paper and store it somewhere safe. Trezor Suite will *never* ask you to type this seed into your computer. With this seed, you can recover your entire wallet on any compatible device if your Trezor is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Open-Source and Audited

Trust is earned through transparency. Both the Trezor Suite software and the firmware for the Trezor devices are 100% open-source. This means their code can be independently reviewed and audited by security experts around the world. There are no backdoors and no hidden secrets—what you see is what you get.

Passphrase: The Ultimate Failsafe

For advanced users, Trezor Suite supports an optional "passphrase" (often called the 25th word). This is a custom word or. sentence that you memorize. It is added to your recovery seed to create a completely new, hidden wallet. This provides plausible deniability; even if someone steals your physical recovery seed, they cannot access the funds in your passphrase-protected wallet without also knowing your memorized passphrase.

Your Journey to Self-Custody

  1. 1

    Get a Trezor

Purchase a Trezor Model T or Trezor Model One directly from the official Trezor website or an authorized reseller. This ensures your device is genuine and has not been tampered with.

  2. 2

    Download Trezor Suite

Go to suite.trezor.io to download the official desktop application. For added security, advanced users can (and should) verify the software's signature to confirm its authenticity.

  3. 3

    Secure Onboarding

Connect your new Trezor device and follow the simple on-screen instructions in Trezor Suite. You will install the firmware, create a new wallet, and—most importantly—create and back up your offline recovery seed.

  4. 4

    Fund Your Wallet

You're all set! You can now send cryptocurrency from an exchange to your new, ultra-secure Trezor address, or use the "Buy" feature directly within the Suite to purchase your first assets.
